The Pod Goes Into Orbit

27/4/2010

‘Local Podcast triumphs at South Worcester Young Enterprise Presentation Evening.’

After blasting off in February, Worcester’s first podcast aimed at the 16 to 21 year old market won three awards and progressed to the Hereford and Worcester finals at the Young Enterprise Presentation Evening at West Mercia Police HQ on 27 April.

The Pod carried off awards for the Overall Winner at the Young Enterprise Spring Fair at the Guildhall in March, Most Innovative Product, and Best Use of IT.

The Pod’s managing director, Curtis Smith, said ‘’We’re all thrilled with our success at the local Young Enterprise finals. Our small team has put in a tremendous effort to achieve this result, and we are looking forward to the next round of the Young Enterprise competition in Hereford on 4 May.”

On 4th May The Pod triumphed again, and against stiff opposition won Best use of IT. Devised, produced and promoted by a group of students from Worcester Sixth Form College, The Pod is a weekly broadcast for young people by young people covering all sorts of topical issues and interesting events across Worcestershire.

A number of local businesses have already leant their support to the venture, and The Pod continues to look for ideas, updates and contributions from listeners.

The current podcast features the usual mix of topical youth articles and showcases an exciting local musician, Christine. The website has already had over 3,000 hits, and the rate of downloads is accelerating.

To access a free download of the podcast, just go The Pod website at www.the-pod.co.uk.

New York Trip

5/3/2010

Barely able to contain our excitement on the seven hour plane journey, we landed at JFK airport late Wednesday evening, armed with a battalion of cameras, bulging wallets and cries of ‘New York!’ for various video cameras. Hurling all luggage into our rooms at the Sheraton Manhattan Hotel, we congregated outside for our first glimpse of the mighty Times Square!
The lights! The sounds! All remnants of jet lag were instantly vaporised. In true tourist fashion, we wandered down the streets in awe and intrigue, making sure to take photos of every shiny billboard and street performer along the way. Landmarks such as the Hard Rock Cafe, the Hersheys Factory and the many Broadway theatres amazed us, before everyone was forced to answer the unwanted inward plea of sleep.
Before we knew it, however, we were up and ready to go, strutting our stuff in the Musical Theatre Workshop, with ‘Hair’ star Kacie Sheik. Giving us a taste of the Broadway show we were seeing that evening, we learnt how the stars were given the freedom to create their own movements, as long as they were truly extravagant and expressive. As the girls wept over the forced act of messing up their hair for the number, the boys tried desperately to work with the small amount of hair they had; nonetheless, everyone had a great deal of fun, laughing from start to finish.

Government League Tables Show Outstanding Performance by Worcester Sixth Form College

28/1/2010

WSFC is delighted by the fact that its students achieved the highest average points score per advanced level exam entry of any Worcestershire post-16 state school or college. WSFC students scored an average of 215.2 points per entry compared to an England average of 208.3 and a Worcestershire average of 200.8. However, the most important thing to us is that all students at the College make excellent progress and this is shown by the post-16 Contextualised Value Added measure, which the government has just published. This is the second year that this measure has been published and it again shows outstanding performances by WSFC students. Click here to view entire article.

The Bewdley School and Sixth Form

I chose to do Textiles because I absolutely love fashion and design. I especially love contour design - in particular, corsetry. Over the past two years I have learned a variety of new techniques including screen printing and dyeing and there are plenty of materials at hand. The course is really varied and you feel free in the relaxed friendly environment. Next year I am going to Worcester College of Techology to do a Foundation course before moving on to university. |
