On Friday 29th April, Year 12 and 13 Politics students welcomed former Home Secretary Jacqui Smith to College for a question and answer session. Jacqui, who was the Labour MP for Redditch for thirteen years and a government minister under Tony Blair and Gordon Brown, brought a wealth of political expertise to the event helping to ignite the passion of those present and to develop their political knowledge and understanding.
Jacqui spoke on a range of topics including ‘Partygate’, the importance of the British values of tolerance and mutual respect, the future of the UK’s main political parties and the continued impact of Brexit. Numerous topical issues were addressed including the war in Ukraine and the misogynistic culture in the House of Commons. She encouraged students of all genders to pursue their political ambitions and help to bring about much needed changes to Parliament. Students also asked about her recent work, including visits to the Middle East, and becoming a notable figure on British television.
The event was a great success thanks to Jacqui’s enthusiasm and the excellence of the questions asked by all students. The Politics department looks forward to more visits from politicians in the future, following the successful visit of local MP Robin Walker earlier this year.
