Junior Internship success

When second year student, Luke Weller, joined Worcester Sixth Form College, he enrolled on the Junior Internship Programme (JIP) and saw the benefits of being able to gain valuable work experience in a local STEM company.  Luke knew he wanted to pursue a career in engineering and was successful in securing a placements at Malvern Panalytical Ltd.

Prior to COVID restrictions, Luke had been frequently visiting Malvern Panalytical Ltd for meetings with his mentor, Jason Corbett, Head of Research and Development.  Jason set Luke tasks and areas to research in between visits to help him understand the industry better.  Once face to face visits were no longer possible, Luke kept in touch with his mentor on a weekly basis to discuss topics related to Malvern Panalytical’s research areas.  This led to discussions about aspects of Luke’s Extended Projects Qualification (EPQ).

Luke’s EPQ project involved building a Rocket Stabilisation System designed to be used in model rockets. Reflecting on his experiences so far, Luke said: “Creating my CV and application for the JIP gave me the chance to write about my achievements and interests which also helped me in making applications to university.” He adds: “I would recommend the JIP to anyone who has an interest in STEM and wishes to work in that field.  I gained a lot of experience that helped me consider the best courses for me during virtual University open days and I am looking forward to increasing my work experience during my industry placement year as part of my future degree course.”

Luke received outstanding feedback from his mentor who commended his enthusiasm and are using his reports as an exemplar of best practice.

Luke has applied to study Aerospace Engineering with Space Technology at university and hopes to work in the space sector after graduation. We are sure he will be successful in all his endeavours and look forward to following his achievements.
